We are planning the publication of selected case studies showcasing how the principles of openness in second / foreign language teaching and learning are applied in practice. The book will be a collection of case studies providing practical suggestions for the incorporation of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Practices (OEP), and Open Communication principles to the language classroom and to the initial and continuing development of language teachers. This open-access e-book, aimed at practitioners in secondary and tertiary education, will be freely available for download.

This publication will showcase some of the projects and activities presented at “Learning through sharing: Open Resources, Open Practices, Open Communication” workshop of the EUROCALL Computer Mediated Communication and Teacher Education SIGs held at the University of Bologna on 29-30 March 2012.

The main themes covered in the conference were:

theories that underpin openness as a key principle in education

using OER in teaching and/or course development, including reusing and re-purposing existing resources for different contexts or resource-based learning

integrating learner-generated content into language courses

developing a culture of sharing amongst the teaching community (barriers to and advantages of sharing)

sharing resources and/or practices in teacher education and professional development (e.g. through peer review of resources)

sharing resources and intellectual capital with others to raise individual or institutional profiles (e.g. through publishing resources on itunes U, contributing to a resource repository, open access publishing of research papers )

promoting learner communication in ‘open’ environments (e.g. through online gaming, virtual worlds, international discussion boards)

· facilitating open communication in CMC - where ‘sensitive’ topics can be broached and diverse opinions are valued.

We are now inviting those who took part in the event but also other interested colleagues to submit a case study proposal (maximum 500 words) by 30 September 2012 to the co-editors of the publication, Ana Beaven (University of Bologna, Italy), Anna Comas-Quinn (Open University, UK) and Barbara Sawhill (Oberlin College, USA). In particular, the committee’s findings that foreign language and literature departments need to become more client-centered and to adapt language curricula to the pragmatic use of language in a variety of globalized professional settings, are considered by some to be problematic. Need change be so unsettling for faculty? Are there ways in which implementation of the recommendations of “Foreign Languages and Higher Education: New Structures for a Changed World” can benefit and reinvigorate the study of foreign languages in higher education? Looking backwards to technologies that have faded and to some that have flourished, we examine how the profession has evolved to a new mature state of interactivity and connectivity. We are at a place where technologies are converging to facilitate personal expression and trans-cultural mobility.

Become Fluent with Language Immersion for Google Chrome | Techland | TIME.com

Become Fluent with Language Immersion for Google Chrome | Techland | TIME.com

PlaySay - A social app to learn Spanish and English

PlaySay - A social app to learn Spanish and English

Gaston Caperton: The Future of Chinese Language Education

Gaston Caperton: The Future of Chinese Language Education

First DLS Regional Seminar - The Opium Trade in Afghanistan

First DLS Regional Seminar - The Opium Trade in Afghanistan:
This event will provide an in-depth look at the opium trade
in Afghanistan from several different perspectives and is
targeted to those who focus on mission-based,
operational work or regional studies in Afghanistan.
Please go to http://dlsdc.com/calendardlsevent for more
information on the speakers and lecture topics.

Edmodo Tutorial Video

Edmodo Tutorial Video:
coolcatteacher:

America’s strained relations with North African states, particularly the regencies of Algiers and Tripoli during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, have been the object of numerous historical accounts, and have generated a continuing controversy among American historians about the failures and accomplishments of US policies towards this part of the Muslim world. Following the tragic incidents of 11 September 2001, several studies have again appeared on America’s encounter with the so-called Barbary States advocating analogies between terrorist attacks and corsair activity. This talk offers a critique of this established historiography and the politicized drifts which characterize its recent publications.
